It may have been a defeat but there were a huge amount of positives to take from the performance as Bedford Blues went down 18-55 to European Champions Saracens at Goldington Road on Saturday afternoon.

Playing down the slope, Bedford started the brighter side and immediately put pressure on the Saracens defence who coughed up a penalty which Will Hooley duly dispatched in the third minute.

Bedford Blues preparations for the forthcoming Championship season certainly ramp up this weekend as they welcome European Champions Saracens to Goldington Road.

Following an impressive display against Plymouth Albion last Saturday, the Blues know that they will be facing one of the biggest challenges in rugby when they welcome Mark McCall's men to Bedford.

Looking ahead to the fixture, Blues Forwards Coach Martin Hynes said: "Having refelcted on last week's performance we were pleased. The lads played really well, attacked superbly and put in some fine defensive work against a tough and well-drilled Plymouth outfit.

Bedford Blues have launched their new second jersey ahead of the new season which will be worn for the first time this Saturday against European Champions Saracens and available to purchase from the club shop or online.

The design mirrors the home strip which was introduced last season, with the traditional Bedford hoops still featured in a modern style. The biggest change is to the primary colour as the Blues will be running out in a white shirt this season with white shorts and socks.

The Club are pleased to announce further details of this season's ‘Meet the Players’ evening which will be held on Thursday 24th August from 6:30pm for 7pm in the Scrum Hall, exclusively for 2017-18 Season Ticket holders.

The pre-season event was again included in the Season Ticket package following the success of the last two seasons’ introduction with an early chance to hear the views of the Director of Rugby Mike Rayer, captain Michael Le Bourgeois and some of the new faces at Goldington Road ahead of the Championship campaign.

After an opening day warm-up, it’s time for the big one as Bedford Blues welcome European Champions Saracens to town this Saturday (KO 3pm).

Fresh from a comprehensive victory over Plymouth Albion last weekend, Mike Rayer’s men know they will be in for a much stiffer challenge versus the sizeable task Mark McCall’s troops will deliver at Goldington Road.

Bedford Blues kicked off their pre-season campaign with a comprehensive 43-7 victory over National One side Plymouth Albion at Goldington Road on Saturday afternoon.

While the score line may have suggested otherwise, the Blues had to dig deep early on and put in a good defensive display against Kieran Hallett's men who are expected to be pushing for promotion this season.

With a strong Blues defence in place, the attack was in just as inspired form with Howard Packman crossing the whitewash twice while Man of the Match Rich Lane, Michael Le Bourgeois, George Edgson, Paul Tupai and Dean Adamson all scored.

It's been 17 weeks - that's 119 days, or 2,856 hours, even 171,360 minutes, and an incredible 10,281,600 seconds - since Bedford Blues last took to the field for a game of rugby, so it's fair to say that there is some excitement about this weekend's pre-season fixture against Plymouth Albion.

The game, which kicks off at 3pm on Saturday at Goldington Road, will be Director of Rugby Mike Rayer's first real opportunity to cast his eye over his squad in a competitive match following two months of hard graft on the training field.

Rugby returns to Goldington Road this Saturday for Bedford Blues’ first match of the season against National One promotion hopefuls Plymouth Albion (KO 3pm).

Many of the new Bedford faces will be on display with DoR Mike Rayer expected to name a strong side for a stiff first challenge against the West Country men, now led by former Blue Kieran Hallett.

Whilst the Blues players prepare for their pre-season warm up game against Plymouth this Saturday, one of the Blues Academy Development squad players is hitting the headlines in New Zealand.

Fly Half Dan Lewis, who has been playing for the Valley club in the Citizen’s Shield competition in North Otago this summer, has been getting some good write ups in the local press, ending the season as the competition’s highest points scorer and second highest try scorer.  Valley lost to the Old Boys club on Saturday in the final of the Citizens’ Shield play off competition by 20pts – 13.
