On a freezing cold day in Oxford, the Blues Academy beat Oxford University Whippets by 25pts – 12 at Iffley Road.

Bedford’s opening score was a simple one, well executed; a scrum, taken against the head, a drive up the middle, two quick rucks and the ball moved quickly to the left for winger Ross Taylor to score.  With the wind against them the Blues scored two penalties to make the half time score 11pts – 0.

Bedford extended their lead at the beginning of the second half when a great break by prop Ben Thompson, was carried on by 2nd row Charley Harvey.  Centre Harry Hutchins ran around the defence to score under the posts, full back Liam Shields converted and Bedford were 18pts – 0 ahead.  Oxford stole one back before Max Titchener scored from a set move from a scrum, and Shields converted to put the Blues 25 – 7 ahead.  Oxford got another late in the game to make the final score 25pts – 12 to Bedford.

Blues Academy Director Denis Ormesher said .…

“This was a scrappy game, with a high unforced error count by both sides.  We scored some good tries, but need to be more consistent over the full 80 minutes.  We play Nottingham at home next Sunday, and will need to raise the game significantly.”
