Hot on the heels of the first new signings for the 2019/20 Championship season, Bedford Blues have added two more players to their ranks.

Heading to Goldington Road next season will be back rower Joe Atkinson who joins from Premiership side Wasps and Welsh prop Scott Jenkins who has been recruited from Scarlets.

Speaking about the new additions, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “It is great that we are able to add two very impressive players to our ranks and the spine of the squad for next season is really taking shape.

“Joe was a standout player for London Scottish before heading up to Wasps and we’re thrilled that he’ll be bring plenty of nous to Goldington Road. With Ben Cooper and Camilo Parilli-Ocampo leaving the club, it was important to bring in front row option so having a talented player like Scott join the ranks is a massive boost.”

Prior to joining Wasps, Atkinson, 27, had built a reputation as one of the Championship’s best openside flankers. Having started his career at Loughborough Students, Atkinson, who has been capped by England at age group and students levels, caught the attention of Cornish Pirates and spent three seasons in Penzance before heading to the Exiles where he scored 11 tries in 50 appearances and was named as players’ player-of-the-season at the Richmond Athletic Ground.

Jenkins, 21, is a product of the Scarlets Academy having played Under 16s and Under 18s before moving into the full squad while playing for Llandovery. Standing at six feet two inches tall and tipping the scales at 120kg, Jenkins is a powerful prop with impressive scrummaging skills who has also represented Wales Under 20 squad and will add plenty of strength to the Blues front row next season.

Joe and Scott will be joining Dan Temm and Matt Worley as new faces at Goldington Road next season along with Dean Adamson, Oli Curry, Lewis Robling, James Lennon, Ryan Hutler, Rich Lane, Alex Penny and Sean McCarthy who have all agreed new deals to remain at the club.
