Bedford have received a helpful boost for their pre-season encounter against Bishop's Stortford on Friday night with the news that England fullback Ben Foden will be starting the game for the Blues.

Foden, who is heading off to join Major League Rugby in America, has stepped in to lend a hand as the Blues will be without Harry Sheppard (concussion), Lewis Robling (thigh), Jack Nay (concussion), Ryan Hutler (ankle) and Pat Tapley (eye socket).

The 33-year-old former England fullback has become the biggest overseas name to move to the United States after agreeing to join Rugby United New York, with his aim to help develop the country into “the next big rugby playing nation”.

Foden makes the move to the States having spent the past decade at Franklin's Gardens with Northampton and helped the Saints to the Premiership title in 2014, scoring a try in the final victory over Saracens. He earned his first England start against France the following year and would remain as first choice in the side for the 2011 World Cup and through the end of the 2012 season. The last of his 34 caps came on the wing against the New Zealand All Blacks in November of 2013.

But now he'll be wearing the Blue of Bedford having previously gotten a taste for the Goldington Road pitch - and Nos's Nosh - when he turned out for Paul Tupai's Testimonial the day after his final appearance for the Saints.
