JUNIOR REPORTERS - BLUES V CARNEGIE

Bedford Blues welcomed Junior Reporters Gregory Hicks and Amie Gray to Goldington Road on Friday night to take in all of the action from the game against Yorkshire Carnegie and then pose some challenging questions to Phil Boulton and Jake Sharp – Enjoy!

As the evening sky fell over Goldington Road on Friday the 14th, the crowds gathered to watch Bedford Blues take on Yorkshire Carnegie.

An exhilarating first ten minutes unfortunately saw Blues captain Nick Fenton-Wells coming off with injury and being replaced by Josh Buggea. Alarmingly, David Doherty scored his first try of the season for the opposing team, making the score 0-7 after Harry Leonard converted.

Fortunately, an epic reply from Darryl Veenendaal reduced the deficit to 5-7 when the scrum half picked up the ball from the back of the ruck and bundled his way over. Sadly, the conversion was missed by Jake Sharp so the Blues were still behind behind.

A yellow card for Carnegie's Matt Smith rejuvenated the Blues and another rapid run from Veenendaal created a penalty for the home side. From around 40 yards out, the ball was accurately kicked by Sharp and the Blues went in ahead at the interval 8-7.

Kicking off the second half, a menacing tackle from Viliami Hakalo showed Yorkshire Carnegie that the Blues meant business and it wasn't long until Bedford extended their lead with an almighty team effort to score a second try. Using a spectacular switch to create space, the ball was placed over the line by Jim Wigglesworth much to the delight of the roaring crowd. Sharp’s conversion  lifted the score to become 15-7.

Startled by the points, Yorkshire Carnegie attacked harder and attempted to win it back by edging their way closer to the Blues try line. However, the Blues were stronger. This then lead to an exhausting final 10 minutes as Bedford Blues defended heroically in their own 22. While they prevented a try, they did concede a final minute penalty which was converted by Leonard to make the score at 15-10 as full time whistle had sounded.

Huge congratulations to Bedford Blues on such a commendable win and their enormous efforts throughout the game. A well enjoyed game by both the team and the Blues supporters.
