Bedford Blues plans for the coming Championship campaign are continuing with the announcement of a pre-season friendly against Cambridge at Goldington Road on Friday 23rd August.

Richie Williams charges - who are also being coached by former Blues man Dan Richmond - will be heading along the A428 to face the Blues with kick-off at 7.45pm.

Bedford and Cambridge have clashed in numerous pre-season encounters over the years with the last being back in 2012 when the Blues won 77-5 away from home with tries coming from James Stephenson (4), Gregor Gillanders, Don Barrell, Neil Cochrane, Luke Baldwin, Scott Spurling, Joe Vandermolen, Mark Kohler, Sacha Harding and Josh Bassett.

Looking ahead to the game, Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “We’ve got a huge season ahead of us with a number of new players arriving at the club so it is important to get some game time under our belts before the campaign kicks off.

“Cambridge have recruited very well over the summer both on and off the pitch, so we are expecting a very tough challenge against a talented team who will be looking to have a real crack in National One this season.

“The game offers us a chance to assess how far we’ve come over pre-season in terms of skills and fitness as well trying out some new combinations to see how everyone fits in. It will also be a great chance for both sets of supporters to see how their respective teams are shaping up before the start of the season”.

Cardiff Blues Head Coach John Mulvihill said: “Bedford will provide us with a solid test early on and the opportunity to try some new combinations and options both attack and defence. Travelling away from the Arms Park will also give us an opportunity to trial new match-day preparations in order to get our away from home record started.

“Bedford are one of the leading teams in the Championship and did really well to finish third last year when you consider the quality of London Irish and Ealing Trailfinders.

“There is also a nice link with Mike Rayer, who is remembered so fondly at the Arms Park, director of rugby up there and I’m sure there will be a good travelling contingent from the region.”

Tickets for the game will be available to buy on the Blues website very soon and more fixtures will also be announced.
