Bedford Blues pack is starting to take shape for the 2019/20 Championship season with three more players committing themselves to the club for the coming campaign.

Will Carrick-Smith, Ed Taylor and Josh Buggea have all signed new deals to remain at Goldington Road and Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer is thrilled that the trio have re-signed.

“Our pack has really grown this season and it is clear what an impact Alex Rae is having on the forwards, so to have three more in place for next season is great for continuity” he said.

“Will, Ed and Josh are all honorary Bedfordians these days and have racked up more than 250 appearances in Blues jerseys between them. Look, it’s not just about them being very good rugby players it’s also about having good characters in and around the squad and they certainly fit that bill well. We are delighted that they are on board for another campaign.”

Since joining at the start of the 2016/17 season, Will Carrick-Smith has gone from strength to strength at Goldington Road. It's no wonder that at 6ft 11ins tall, Carrick-Smith is affectionately known by his teammates as 'Tree', but he's certainly someone who likes to chop down his opponents. An excellent lineout operator who provides plenty of power to the scrum, Carrick-Smith is adaptable to whoever he plays alongside. After heading to Bedford from London Scottish, Carrick-Smith - who spent a season at Exeter Chiefs - has gone on to develop his game superbly under the tutelage of Martin Hynes and has progressed even further with Alex Rae at the helm.

It's been somewhat of a meteoric rise for 25 year old Ed Taylor who moved to Goldington Road in the summer of 2016 having previously captained Loughborough Students. Taylor, has represented England at Under 18 and 19 Levels as well as Wales Students and was also part of the Blues squad which took part in the 2015 Mobbs Memorial game at Goldington Road. Ed also picked up Championship experience when he featured for Rotherham Titans while on a dual-registration deal when he was a member of the Worcester Warriors Academy. Standing at 6ft 4ins tall and able to play in the second or back row, he always plays with great enthusiasm and adds real energy to the Blues pack.

It’s fair to say that 25-year-old Josh Buggea is Bedford through and through since signing at the beginning of the 2014/15 season from Premiership outfit Worcester Warriors. The back rower quickly established himself in the Blues team with pace and power as well as a superb skill set which was recognised and appreciated by his teammates who voted him the Player's Player of the Season for 2015/16. Buggea was a student at Bablake School, which helped to produce 1974 British and Irish Lion Geoff Evans and, more recently, England fly Half Shane Geraghty, before moving on to Hartpury college. During his time at Hartpury, Buggea played and won the AASE final against Oaklands college in 2011 before being called up to England under 18s in 2012.

Will, Ed and Josh join the growing numbers at Goldington Road for the coming season alongside new signings Joe Atkinson (Wasps), Scott Jenkins (Scarlets), Dan Temm (Yorkshire Carnegie) and Matt Worley (Northampton Saints)  along with Dean Adamson, Oli Curry, Lewis Robling, James Lennon, Ryan Hutler, Rich Lane, Alex Penny and Sean McCarthy who have all agreed new deals to remain at the club.
