Academy News

After good wins in the last two weeks, against Ealing and Nottingham, the Blues Academy face a much tougher challenge against the older Cambridge Univeristy U21 XV, at Goldington Road on Saturday November 9th, Kick Off 2.30pm.

Cambridge, who are preparing for their Varsity game at Twickenham in early December, had good wins recently against Moseley U21 XV and Bath University.  The University side, who will be on average two years older than the Blues, will present a tough physical challenge for  Bedford.

The Blues Academy won the first game of the "double header" weekend against Nottingham.  Although slow to get into gear the Blues scored seven tries to produce a convincing performance to win by 43pts - 12, and set the scene for the Blues Championship game away at Nottingham on Sunday.

After a good away win against Ealing last week the Blues Academy play the first game of another "double header" weekend when they play Nottingham, at Goldington Road on Saturday November 2nd, Kick Off 2.30pm.

On a blustery day, with heavy rain in the fist half, the Blues Academy won the first game of the "double header" weekend against Ealing.  Scoring seven tries the Blues put up a convincing performance to win by 47pts - 3, and set the scene for the Blues Championship game against Ealing on Sunday.

The Blues Academy game vs Loughborough University Freshers has been cancelled due to pitch problems at Loughborough.

The next Academy game is on Saturday October 26th - away to Ealing - Kick Off 2.30 pm. 

The Blues Academy beat Oxford University Under 21 XV by 24pts - 19 at Iffley Road.  Ahead by 24pts - 0 at half time the Blues let the students back into the game in the 2nd half but managed to hold on for a 24pts - 19 win in a much improved performance.

Bedford Academy lost to a talented St. Joseph's College, Ipswich, side by 28pts - 12 at Goldington Road on Wednesday night.

Bedford Head Coach James Hinkins said .... "'St Joe's were hungrier for the ball, were better organised and made less unforced errors. This is a valuable learning experience we must learn from before Saturday when we face a more physical Oxford University Under 21 XV."

The Blues Academy play St. Joseph’s College Ipswich at Goldington Road on Wednesday October 9th KO 7.30 pm. The bar is open, all are welcome. 

St. Joe’s, who are one of the most successful rugby schools in the South of England, have contributed a number of players to the Blues Academy over the last two seasons including ex-St. Joe’s pupil winger/full back Chris Lord who signed for the Blues 1st XV this summer. 

Bedford Blues Academy 7pts:  Leicester Tigers Academy 33 pts:  Sat October 5th 2013 

For the second week running the Blues Academy lost to an RFU funded Premiership Academy going down by 33pts – 7 against Leicester Tigers Academy at Goldington Road. 

Blues’ Academy Director Denis Ormesher said ... “Saints and Tigers on consecutive weekends is about as tough as it gets – exactly the challenge our guys need”.
