Obituary - Arthur Grenfell ‘Aggie’ Coomb

We were very sad to hear from his family that Arthur Coomb, one of the club’s oldest players, died on the 29th June at the age of 93.

Arthur was educated at Bedford Modern where he captained the school in 1946. 

He played for the Blues from 1949-55, after National Service in the Navy. ‘Aggie’ was a utility player-full back, fly-half, centre and back-row forward. He played 55 games for the 1st XV and also played for the Wanderers. Some of his contemporaries were Tony Marshall, Bill Whiting, Larry Webb, Brian McCarthy and Gerry Micklewright. 

Having moved to Norfolk in 1956, he returned to Bedford in the mid-sixties where he became a keen supporter at Goldington Road.

Arthur also played cricket for Bedfordshire and represented the Minor Counties against South Africa, India and Australia in 1951/52/53 respectively.

He retired to Cornwall in 1991 and always made a beeline for the Mennaye whenever the Blues were playing the Pirates.

Our thoughts are with Arthur’s family at this sad time.
