Match Focus: Newcastle live on Sky in support of our Forces
Posted: 6th November 2019
Bedford Blues host relegated Premiership side Newcastle Falcons this Saturday as the champions elect arrive in town for a mammoth showdown at Goldington Road in front of the Sky Sports cameras (KO 3:30pm).
The fixture doubles as the Club's 9th annual Armed Forces and Emergency Services day with Free Entry to all serving personnel, simply show your ID at the gate on match day for free ground access.
On Remembrance weekend, the Blues are supporting those who put their lives on the line for the freedom of others and placing thanks to members of the police, fire and ambulance services.
Back on the field, the Blues will be aiming to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat away at Doncaster, but won’t be underestimating the challenge at hand against an unbeaten, top of the table, Newcastle outfit hunting an immediate return to the Premiership.
Dean Richards’ Falcons have not had an easy time of it so far this Championship season, only narrowly beating London Scottish and Cornish Pirates on the road. However, emphatic 40+ point victories over Hartpury, Doncaster and Jersey suggests Newcastle are making strides forward, and with a star-studded line-up, supporters should be in for a fast-flowing contest.
Following a tough start to the season, Mike Rayer’s Bedford troops have endured a tough week of training in preparation for the big match. Director of Rugby, Rayer added: “It is fair to say that there is an element of frustration amongst the squad as each of last three losses could have ended very differently.
“Whether it was our indiscipline, wrong decision making or simple mistake, we only have ourselves to blame. Thankfully, these are simple fixes and we’re challenging the lads into showing us what they are capable of this Saturday.”
Gates open at the usual time of 12 noon, arrive early to avoid the queues for this busy match day, grab a programme and mix with fellow supporters. Our meeting point would be the upstairs Eagle Bar for a pint of this week’s Guest Ale; McEwans Head Point or Bedford’s own Eagle IPA.
This week’s Optimis Consulting Guard of Honour join us from St Mary’s Academy Stotfold, please give them and the players a loud cheer as they run out alongside the Bedford Bear! Why not grab a Blues TRY card from Blues Community and get on Sky Sports this Saturday!
Visit the new mini supporter village between the SDC Suite and Former Players on the north-east side of the ground. Spectators will this Saturday find an additional Trailer Bar, our new Coffee & Cake Horsebox and new winter special; The Mulled Defender serving warm mulled wine and cider.
In addition to the above, the Club will be supporting SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association), a charity giving life-long support for our forces and their families. Supporters will be able to visit the SSAFA stand in the mini village.
After the game visit the Blues Marquee for the Anglian Fasteners’ Man of the Match presentation, mix with players and enjoy live music with the fantastic Ellie Antonini.
Don’t forget to pop into the Club Shop before you leave to check out the new leisurewear range or home replica jersey. Located next to the marquee, pop in to show your colours!
