Tommy Bell set for Bedford Blues
Highly experienced former Premiership playmaker Tommy Bell has agreed to join Bedford Blues, ahead of the proposed Championship season.
The 28-year old – who is equally adept at outside-half or full-back – brings a vast amount of experience and versatility to Goldington Road having enjoyed successful spells at Sale Sharks, Leeds Carnegie, Wasps, Jersey, Leicester Tigers, London Irish and Ealing Trailfinders.
A prolific goal-kicker, Bell arrives at training this week on the back of a successful trip to the Bermuda 10s where he racked up 53 points for Asia Pacific Dragons.
On joining the club, Bell said: “I’ve always enjoyed playing at Bedford in front of their great crowd so I’m looking forward to running out at Goldington Road in Bedford colours.”
Bell, who began his career with Sale in 2010, is familiar with Bedford as his older brother, and former Wasps captain Chris, lives near to the club.
After an impressive loan spell with Leeds, Bell spent two years at Wasps before moving back to the Championship with Jersey. His performances again shone in tier two as Tigers quickly picked him up, going on to tally up 123 points in 25 appearances at Welford Road.
He moved to Irish in 2016, making a further 40 appearances including helping them to the Championship title in his first season by adding over 250 points, ahead of spending last season with Ealing.
Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer, added: “This is great news for everyone at the club. Tommy brings a wealth of experience; is a class operator and he certainly likes Goldington Road as a venue as I believe he has a favourable record here!
“He’s definitely been a thorn in our side on more than one occasion, so it’ll be great to see him in our colours."
