Exciting Irish prop Corrie Barrett joins Blues

Posted: 9th February 2021

Bedford Blues are delighted to announce that young Irish prop Corrie Barrett has joined up with Mike Rayer’s squad ahead of the 2021 Championship season.

The 22-year-old prop - equally adept at loosehead or tighthead – crosses the Irish Sea boasting a rich rugby heritage having followed in the footsteps of his father, Brian who was an Ireland U21s international.

Mentored by his father since his first introduction to rugby at age five, the talented young Belfast forward already boasts a wealth of experience and is no stranger to travelling in pursuit of developing his game.

Barrett started out as part of the Ulster U19s side before the travel bug hit and he moved to New Zealand outfit Otago, featuring in their age grade setup.

A place in the Ulster Sub-Academy awaited on his return, plying his weekend trade with club side Banbridge. A move across the provinces saw Barrett join Munster last season where he remained until his move to Goldington Road, featuring mainly in the ‘A’ side and the infamous Garryowen club.

On the international front, Barrett is an Ireland representative international and last February helped retain the Dalriada Cup for the Ireland Club XV against Scotland Clubs.

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer, added: “I really liked the background to Corrie’s journey so far. As a young man he has never been afraid to go and sample different opportunities whenever those were presented to him.  We spoke to Paul Shields at Saints and Clem Boyd in Belfast who had played with his Father back in the day, and they gave us some very useful inside information on Corrie.

"His chances with Munster were hampered by Covid-19 so with Alex Penny’s retirement, this gives Corrie a great opportunity here with us now.”

This signing has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of The Beard Group, thank you for your support for the 2021 Championship season.
