Quadruple backs re-signing
On the eve of Bedford Blues’ return to action, the Club are delighted to announce the re-signing of a further four players in the backs’ division.
With just over 150 cumulative appearances; Pat Tapley, James Lennon, Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas and Will Maisey have all signed on the dotted line ahead of the 2021 campaign.
The longest serving current player at Goldington Road, Tapley, now sponsored by the FECCERS, is gearing up for his seventh season in Bedford and is set to become the next member of the century club, having made 99 appearances and scored 48 tries.
Bedford’s top try scorer in the 2014/15 season, Tapley was included in the Championship Dream Team 12 months later after a stellar campaign which included a memorable hat-trick against Richmond at Goldington Road.
Scrum-Half Lennon, 23, and sponsored by Bluechip, has been an ever-present in the match day squad since signing a permanent deal after graduating from the Blues Academy in 2018. Already with 35 appearances and scoring six tries, ‘Jiffy’ has brought tempo to the Blues backline on every occasion.
A former Saracens and Munster Junior Academy prospect, Lennon has received international recognition having featured for the Ireland 7s side and being chosen in the U20s training squad ahead of a Six Nations campaign.
Hirskyj-Douglas, 25, sponsored by Fire Response, was one of the standout performers in his debut campaign at Goldington Road last season, being named in the Championship Dream Team as one of two Bedford players selected, alongside Jordan Onojaife.
The centre made 18 appearances in 2019/20, scoring one try, and becoming a mainstay in the team post-Christmas when starting every game of the new decade.
Maisey, 27, now sponsored by Optimis Consulting, arrived on a short-term deal before the premature end to last season, limiting him to just one appearance, as a late replacement against Newcastle Falcons.
The fly-half, who has a wealth of Championship experience having also spent time in the division with Nottingham, Coventry and Ampthill, had already impressed Mike Rayer, who rewarded him with a longer term extension for his first full campaign at Goldington Road.
