Match Ball Charity Challenge
Bedford Blues are delighted to be supporting the ‘Beat the Blues’ charity challenge as match day partners against Ampthill this Saturday in the season concluding Battle of Bedfordshire fixture.
The challenge has been designed by a group of seven Bedford Blues supporters and friends who are looking to help raise money for Harry’s Giant Pledge and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
In June 2019, rugby fanatic Harry Shaw tragically lost his life to cancer, aged just five-years old. His parents, Charlotte and James, have since set up Harry’s Giant Pledge to gather support for research into Ewing’s Sarcoma and other childhood cancers.
In recognition of Harry’s bravery and to honour his memory, Joe Sylvester (challenge organiser) and his team will first cycle a total of 100kms from The Royal Marsden Hospital (Fulham, London) into Bedford to deliver the match ball in time for kick-off at the highly anticipated Battle of Bedfordshire.
They will then run laps around Bedford during the game, covering a further 100kms in an attempt to double the distance which the players are expected to run during the game.
All proceeds from the event will fund pioneering research into a new treatment approach for children with sarcoma cancers. Of the overall £500,000 target, over £476,000 has already been raised as the world of sport unites around a worthy cause.
Bedford Blues are proud to show their support and join a growing list including Boston Red Sox, NASCAR, Mercedes, Harlequins and sports stars including Lewis Hamilton and Gary Lineker.
The team had initially planned to tie in a challenge with our scheduled fixture at Jersey Reds last season, however due to COVID-19 and the early cancellation of the Championship season, this option wasn’t viable.
