REPORT | Celebration of Bedford Rugby

Geoff Irvine signed off his time as Chairman of Bedford Blues in the best possible way – watching joué on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Goldington Road.
A match contested by current Blues players, former legends from Irvine’s tenure here at Bedford Blues and some of the local clubs he played for during his playing days concluded his tenure and completed a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend of rugby at Bedford’s premier sporting club.
There were 25 tries in total as ‘Blues Away’ edged out ‘Blues Home’ by a score line of 88-65.
With team sheets nowhere to be seen, it was more trying to spot the legend out at Goldington Road as current crop Will Maisey, Ewan Fenley, Andre Robson, Will Carrick Smith, Corrie Barrett, Sean McCarthy, Matt Worley, Rich Lane and Pat Tapley all played their part.
Former Blues legends Matt Allen, Sacha Harding, Jarad Williams, Dan Richmond, Handre Schmidt, Ben Whetstone, Ben Adams, Ian Vass, Dean Adamson, Alex Rae, Paul Tupai, Jake Sharp, Jon Phillips and Darren Fox also stepped out onto the field, while Mike Le Bourgeois and Camilo Parilli-Ocampo were among the spectators.
The rest of players were comprised from Bedford Queens and Bedford Athletic RFC.
Schmidt won the popular opinion award for Man of the Match following his stellar six-try performance. Further scores came from Adams, Tapley (3), Whetstone, Worley, Allen (2), Richmond, Sharp (2), Fox, Adamson and the others from players not associated with Bedford Blues.
It was a wonderful expose of the Bedford way Irvine has always tried to instil at this club and gave the people of Bedford their opportunity to say thanks to a man who has given his life for the past two decades.
Thank you for everything, Geoff!
