Maisey and Hirskyj-Douglas re-sign

Posted: 16th June 2021

Bedford Blues are pleased to announce that two influential members of the back division have pledged their future to Goldington Road for the 2021/22 Championship campaign.

Edging towards 50 cumulative appearances, Will Maisey and Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas have both signed as preparations continue to fall into place for next season.

Maisey, 28, sponsored by Optimis Consulting, finished as Bedford’s top points scorer last season with 54 having featured in every Championship fixture.

Initially joining the club in March 2020, featuring against Newcastle Falcons before having his first year at Bedford interrupted by COVID, the experienced Championship marksman has now settled into Blues’ life ahead of his second full campaign.

The fly-half has also featured for Nottingham and Coventry in this division, plus a spell at nearby Ampthill, as he approaches the 1,000 points mark across his career.

Hirskyj-Douglas, 26, sponsored by Fire Response UK, missed the opening few weeks of the last campaign with a calf problem. But he came back firing at Doncaster Knights in April and played a pivotal role in the Championship run-in, dotting down against Ampthill in the Battle of Bedfordshire finale.

In total, he has made 22 appearances and scored two tries since joining ahead of the 2019/20 season, being named in the Championship Dream Team during his debut campaign.

Commenting on the re-signing of the backs duo, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “Obviously there are going to be several new signings for next season but it was important to us to keep some continuity in the right areas.

"Will and Oskar in the midfield certainly fit the bill in that sense, and both have great attributes in the way we want to play. Will is a real calming influence at 10 and has great experience at this level and Oskar showed towards the back end of the campaign what we saw in him, in the previous season.

"They are also both good characters within the group and will help bring the best out of their teammates around them.”
