Alex Woolford joins for 2021/22
Bedford Blues are delighted to announce that experienced second row Alex Woolford has agreed to join the club for the 2021/22 Championship campaign from old rivals Coventry.
The 28-year-old, sponsored by Hatters Fine Furnishings, is a couple of appearances short of 50 in England’s second tier and will hope to reach that feat with Bedford Blues as Mike Rayer continues to assemble his squad for next season.
On signing at Goldington Road, Woolford said: “I’m delighted to be joining such a prestigious club as Bedford Blues. After speaking to Mike and a few of the guys already in the squad or those who have played here previously, it was a no brainer to move to Goldington Road.
“I was instantly excited by the prospect of playing here in Bedford in front of what I already know is such a big and passionate fan base.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all the staff and my fellow team mates shortly for what will hopefully be the start of an exciting and successful season.”
Beginning his career in the Senior Academy set-up at Northampton Saints, Woolford graduated into the first-team environment three years later and went on to make six appearances in the LV Cup.
Predominantly featuring in the ‘A’ side, who he captained on multiple occasions, Woolford also spent time on dual-reg with Moseley where he got his first taste of Championship rugby in September 2013.
For the latter part of the 2015/16 campaign, Woolford was sent back into the second tier with London Welsh before signing permanently with the Exiles that following summer. Unfortunately, that contract finished early due to the club’s sad demise and liquidation as Woolford completed the season with London Scottish.
Afforded the opportunity to return to Championship rugby by Coventry in 2018/19, Woolford has made 28 appearances in three seasons at Butts Park Arena and heads to Goldington Road eager to nail down a regular starting position.
The transition back to part-time rugby at Goldington Road was critical to his signature as he combines playing with his role as Client Relationship Manager at OCM Wealth Management Limited.
Forwards Coach, Alex Rae added: “Alex comes to us with plenty of experience under his belt and is a proven performer in the Championship. He is an athletic, hard working lock who gets around the field and has great ability around the lineout.
“All the people we spoke to about Alex highlighted what a great person he is to have around the squad so hopefully he will be able to add to and grow the great environment we already have here at Bedford Blues.”
