Jamie Bain returns as Head of S&C

Bedford Blues are delighted to announce the return of Jamie Bain as the Head of Strength & Conditioning for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

Bain returns for his third spell in the role following a sabbatical during the shortened 2021 Championship campaign and is eager to work with the new cohort ahead of an exciting new season.

Speaking on his decision to re-join Bedford’s premier sporting club, Bain said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to be back at Goldington Road. Everyone has had a tough year and it was strange watching from afar but from what I did see, it was really good and I’m excited to get back involved.

“It’s good that a couple of the boys from my last stint are still here. A big part of my role is to have that rapport with players and the fact we’ve already got that with a few will help. I’m looking forward to building that with the new players as well, but that’s ultimately part of the fun getting to know the new guys.

“There’s a couple of changes in the coaching staff, but I have existing relationships with them all and we know how each other works. It will allow us to hit the ground running ahead of what we hope will be a strong Championship campaign.”

Bain initially joined the club in 2010, following a junior spell at Ospreys, before spending two years at Goldington Road as the Club reached the Final of the British & Irish Cup and the Semi-Final of the Championship Play-Offs in that debut campaign.

A five-year stint as Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Gloucester was followed by a short stint at Worcester Warriors and a Six Nations campaign with England U20s, returning to Bedford Blues ahead of the 2017/18 campaign until his sabbatical last season.   

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer added: “Jamie is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw in terms of our coaching set up for the coming season.

"Fair play to Jim [McLagan] because he worked extremely hard last season under extreme constraints, and we thank him a lot for that. However, Jamie will now bring all his experience to what is a unique situation given our situation both with our current structure and our relationship with Northampton Saints.

"Jamie knows our environment incredibly well and will bring massive value and energy to the whole group.”

Bedford Blues would like to place on record its thanks to Jim McLagan who has left the club following the conclusion of the 2021 Championship campaign. We wish him well in his next chapter.
