Kelly joins as Hirskyj-Douglas Is Ruled Out
Bedford Blues are pleased to announce the immediate signature of centre Frank Kelly from Luctonians Rugby Club while at the same time sadly confirming that Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas has suffered a potential season ending Achilles injury.
25-year-old Kelly, now sponsored by Fire Response UK, links up with Mike Rayer’s squad for his first taste of Championship rugby following a successful period in England’s national leagues.
Alongside a short stint at North Otago in New Zealand, Kelly has spent a season in National One with Plymouth before joining Luctonians, where he made more than 100 appearances at Mortimer Park, including two seasons as top try scorer.
Kelly’s arrival comes about after Hirskyj-Douglas suffered a long-term injury over the summer before reporting back for pre-season.
Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “We are desperately disappointed for Oskar, and as you can imagine, he is as well. He’s been great for us over the last couple of seasons and a real character in the changing rooms.
"This does, however, give Frank a great opportunity and he’s really impressed us in pre-season. We are looking forward to seeing how he goes this Saturday.”
On joining the #BluesFamily, Kelly added: “I’m looking forward to playing some running rugby, which Bedford is famous for. I feel like I’ve settled into training over the past few weeks, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really excited about the first home Championship fixture against Doncaster Knights in particular. Not only will it be a great occasion for the team, but I’ll hope to be facing my brother for the first time.”
