Louis Grimoldby joins Bedford Blues

Bedford Blues are delighted to announce the acquisition of outside-half Louis Grimoldby from near neighbours Ampthill ahead of the 2021/21 campaign.

The 27-year-old, sponsored by Epic Intent, heads to Goldington Road with a strong Championship pedigree behind him, finishing the 2019/20 season as the league’s top points scorer and leading Ampthill to back-to-back mid table finishes as captain and backs coach. 

On the short move to Bedford, Grimoldby said: “The opportunity to join such a prestigious club was too good to turn down. Having experienced what Goldington Road is like on Boxing Day, I can’t wait to play in front of the fans in a Blues shirt.

“I am excited by the style of rugby that the Blues play and I’m hoping I can contribute towards that in the coming season, but know there will be tough competition. I’m looking forward to focusing on playing this season, improving my game, and being coached by Mike, Alex and Sharpy.”

Educated at Stamford School, Grimoldby began his career in rugby league, having signed for London Broncos following his GCSEs, but swiftly switched codes to union as Harlequins snapped him up after finishing school.

Spending time on dual-reg with Rosslyn Park, Richmond and Nottingham; Grimoldby went on to make eight first-team appearances at Quins, featuring three times in the Premiership, including a day out at Wembley against Saracens.  

Leaving the London club in 2015, Grimoldby ventured over the channel to France at the age of 21 and spent four seasons with RC Massy, helping them gain promotion to Pro D2 in 2017/18.

Heading back to England for the 2019/20 season with Ampthill, Grimoldby worked in the Blues Community department briefly before finding a permanent teaching role at Biddenham International School and Sports College.

Commenting on the latest arrival to Goldington Road, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “It’s important we have two quality 10s to help guide and shape the team. Louis has been great for Ampthill in the last couple of seasons and we were delighted when he decided to take the short trip down the road to us.

“Competition is always healthy and both Louis and Will Maisey have the added bonus of being versatile and very good goal kickers.”
