MATCH FOCUS | Local bragging rights back up for grabs

Posted: 7th October 2021

Bedford Blues make the familiar short hop across the B530 on Saturday as they search for back-to-back victories in the Championship away at Ampthill (KO 3pm).

Big Game Preview

Mike Rayer’s side travel in confident spirits following the 31-23 victory over Doncaster Knights last Friday night, as both Pat Tapley and Tui Uru made it two tries in as many games.

Securing back-to-back victories would provide a much-needed boost in the table for Bedford, who are a game behind following a bye weekend first up. Currently residing 10th, Blues will be aiming to leapfrog a cluster of clubs separated by only a few points in the middle of the table.

Ampthill head into the game in equally positive mood, looking to defend a perfect home record to start the campaign. While they’ll also be full of confidence following successive wins over Coventry and London Scottish. They are currently 4th in the table with the chance to reach the summit.

Opposing kickers, Will Maisey and Russell Bennett, are both in fine form with only one outside-half above them in the highest scoring charts, trailing Nottingham’s Sam Hollingsworth. This is one of several key battles to watch.

We’ve Met Before

Both sides shared a home win apiece during pre-season, as Ampthill won a 12-try humdinger 40-38 at Dillingham Park before Blues responded with a 38-35 victory at Goldington Road two weeks later.

It means Blues hold the local bragging rights heading into Saturday’s fixture, but all of that goes out of the window in a derby day scrap.
