MATCH FOCUS | Blues set sail for Cornish Pirates
Bedford Blues will be looking to continue their impressive form in the Championship Cup when they make the longest mainland trip to Cornish Pirates on Saturday for the first leg of their Quarter Final tie (KO 2:30pm).

Big Game Preview
Mike Rayer’s side secured their safe passage through to the last-eight with relative comfort following two comprehensive victories over Nottingham in Round One. Blues scored 11 tries in all over the two legs including Dean Adamson dotting down his 100th for the club.
Cornish Pirates, meanwhile, progressed as one of the two best losers having suffered their first home defeat of the 2021/22 campaign as part of an overall defeat to Doncaster Knights. Gavin Cattle and Alan Paver’s side won the away leg to take a lead back home but were overpowered by the Knights in the second leg.
Both sides have proud histories in cup competitions. Bedford secured the RFU Club Competition trophy in 1975 then won the Powergen Shield 30 years later, while Cornish Pirates won the inaugural British & Irish Cup in 2010 and an EDF Energy Cup three years prior.
We’ve Met Before
Blues Director of Rugby, Rayer has faced Cornish Pirates more than any other side during his tenure at Goldington Road, contesting 42 fixtures against the side formerly known as Penzance & Newlyn RFC.
The two sides have contested a total of 44 fixtures to date. Cornish Pirates lead the series with 24 victories to Bedford’s 17, while there has been one draw.
Blues head to Cornwall searching for their first victory at The Mennaye since 21st October 2018, when a superb individual try from current captain, Rich Lane secured a 30-29 success.
