Corrie Barrett continues his stay in Bedford
A third week of player announcements concludes with Corrie Barrett agreeing to stay on for a third season, becoming the 14th member of the #BluesFamily confirmed for the 2022/23 campaign.
The 23-year-old, sponsored by The Beard Group, made 18 appearances in 2021/22 and really kicked on throughout the season amid stern competition from Osman Dimen, who has also recently pledged his future to the club, and Northampton Saints contingent Oisin Heffernan, Karl Garside and Ed Prowse.
On continuing his stay in Bedford, Barrett said: “I’m buzzing for next season. We’ve got a great retention of lads in the pack and that means there’ll be less new learnings, we’ll all get behind each other and hopefully kick on from where we all left off last season.
“It’s getting more and more enjoyable the more I’m here and I can’t wait to get going again. It has been a bit stop-start for me since arriving with an injury in the first season and then some COVID interruptions in the second, so hopefully now there’s going to be more of a flow.
“Hopefully with no further interruptions then it’ll give me a better chance of developing my game throughout the season and adding to the team more. We all want to kick on again next season and we’re really excited to see what we achieve.”
The Irishman vastly improved his game time during 21/22 having gone through a debut season in English rugby ravaged by injury that limited his impact on the field to just three appearances in the truncated 2021 campaign.
His versatility has really shone through at times, looking equally adept on either side of the scrum, and performed an incredibly important job at times when switching across from his familiar tighthead position.
Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer added: “Corrie deserves a lot of credit because we’re pretty thankful to him for making the move across to loosehead when we needed it this year.
“He works so hard on and off the field. He’s lifting slabs and cutting lawns throughout the week yet still throws his all into training and on matchday. He probably found it a little frustrating last season with some small injuries and the COVID contact tracing with housemates, but he’s just got his head down and got on with it.
“With a good pre-season, I think we’ll see lots of good things from Corrie.”
