Jacob Fields commits to seventh season in Bedford

Bedford Blues is soon to have another inductee into the club’s illustrious century club following the news that its current longest serving forward, Jacob Fields has re-committed his future for the 2022/23 campaign.

The 29-year-old, sponsored by Clydesdale, has made 96 appearances for the club to date having arrived in the final weeks of the successful 2015/16 campaign and has never looked back, becoming an integral part of the club both on and off the pitch.

Commenting on further prolonging his stint at Goldington Road, Fields said: “I’m really pleased to re-sign with the club again for a seventh season. I have massively enjoyed my time in Bedford over the years, it’s a special place with good people around and I’ve made some lifelong friends.

“I’m looking forward to being involved in a full Championship campaign after what has been a tough couple of seasons with COVID then on a personal note, two frustrating injuries.

“For me, Bedford has one of the best environments in the Championship and I’m looking forward to being around everyone again for pre-season. Hopefully we can start the new season well.”

Chipping in with 11 tries during his time at the club, Fields has faced stiff competition over the years for the number two jersey, battling with the likes of Charlie Claire, Tom Lindsay, George Edgson and more recently, Jack Hughes, but goes into the 22/23 campaign as one of the team’s real leaders.

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “Most importantly, Jacob gets us. He understands Bedford, he’s a great character, won’t take a backwards step and we saw towards the end of last season that he was getting back to where we expect him to be.

“He will need a big pre-season because he didn’t really have one last year and he’ll definitely benefit from that without any injury problems.

“It’s important we have people in the squad who know the club inside out, like the back of their hand and understand how we, as a management group, operate. It’s good to have players in the changing rooms who will re-enforce our message and Cubby does that in abundance, as well as first and foremost being a really good player.”
