Matt Worley signs on for another year

Posted: 9th June 2022

Bedford Blues are pleased to begin a day of backs re-signings with the news that Matt Worley has agreed to spend a fourth full campaign at Goldington Road.

The 24-year-old, sponsored by Rawlinson Pryde and Partners, concluded the 2021/22 Championship campaign as the club’s second most prolific scorers, chipping in with 13 from 23 appearances in league and cup.

On re-committing his future, Worley said: “I’m very excited for next season. The back line was already good this season just gone, and the competition is only getting better. We’ll be setting even higher standards for ourselves and hopefully that reflects on the pitch.

“The squad is pretty similar to last season, we had a very successful campaign, so hopefully we can go into 2022/23 with the momentum we ended with. We had some fantastic individual and team achievements recently, and we want that to continue again.

“We pride ourselves on the way we play, the way we get the ball out wide and score end to end tries. I think that clicked last season and showed in the amount we scored.”

Initially joining the club on dual registration from Northampton Saints towards the back end of the 2018/19 campaign, Worley is one of the most recent players to make 50 appearances for the club, playing 55 games and scoring 23 tries.

Another to be balancing a rugby-work balance, Worley and former Blues captain Rich Lane have been key drivers behind a new landscaping business in the town, Lane & Acre in the past couple of years.

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer added: “I think it’s great that Matt is doing what he’s doing at the moment because all the landscaping work means he hasn’t got time to overthink things.

“He’s such a naturally gifted, skilful player – he can tackle, beat people with pace – he’s got it all really. And his nickname is magic for a reason.

“He has had a couple of dips with form but fair play to him because he’s battled back and was brilliant towards the end of the season.”
