Matt Worley called up to Hong Kong

Posted: 3rd November 2022

Matt Worley is set to receive further international recognition with Hong Kong having been named in their 29-man squad for the final repechage tournament which sees the last remaining place at next year’s World Cup up for grabs.

The 25-year-old – who linked up with his Hong Kong teammates in Dubai on Sunday – made his debut on the international scene back in the Summer, becoming the 42nd player to receive recognition while contracted to the club.

He scored a try on debut as Hong Kong saw off South Korea to win the Asia Rugby Championship before dotting down twice in a losing effort to Tonga in a straight knockout for a place at rugby’s premier world competition.

Defeat in that game against the Pacific Islanders has put them in this second repechage tournament which gives four nations a final opportunity to go to the 2023 World Cup.

Hosted in the United Arab Emirates, the teams will contest a round-robin style pool stage, starting on Sunday with Hong Kong kicking off their campaign against Portugal.

They will then face USA and Kenya in successive weekends.
