MATCH FOCUS | Blues Women set for year opener
Bedford Blues Women will be looking to make the perfect start to the new calendar year when they begin the second half of their NC2 Midlands (Central) Division campaign away at Biggleswade Ladies this Sunday (KO 2pm).
After a six-week break from competitive action due to fixture postponements, Darryl Veenendaal and Peter Frost’s side will be looking to showcase what extra training sessions have allowed them to work on and get back to winning ways looking to push back into the Top Four league positions.
Big Game Preview
After a few tough outings in recent fixtures, Blues Women will be targeting maximum points when they travel on the road for the first time in 2023. They’ll head across the county with confidence after a stunning 57-0 success in the reverse fixture, which remains Blues’ biggest victory throughout history.
Peterborough and Milton Keynes are starting to pull away at the top of the table, but targeting third place still remains aspirational for the side if they can put a string of results together.

With such a large gap between fixtures recently, the hope is that more players will be available for selection this time around as the squad looks to make a strong inroads into 2023 and move up the table.

What follows this league clash?
It’s set to be quite an exciting few months between now and the end of the season with some tough away trips presenting challenges for the side against the top teams in the division.
A new fixture date for the St Neots clash at Goldington Road is expected imminently, which is one of two fixtures at the home of Bedford’s premier sporting club to conclude the campaign alongside the visit of Rugby Lionesses on Sunday 12th March.
They have one fixture left at nearby Bedford Athletic RFC, which is a week on Sunday (22nd January) against Royston Ladies.
Opposition Analysis
It hasn’t been the easiest of campaigns for Biggleswade who have found player availability a real problem in what is their second season at this level (having finished fourth last year).
That has forced the side to concede four fixtures already this season, including the most recent three games before Christmas. They fought bravely in defeat at Bedford Ath back in October, as well as reverses against Royston and Rugby Lionesses
