Ella-Mobbs Cup on display at Memorial Match

Posted: 2nd April 2023

Supporters at this Thursday’s Mobbs Memorial Match will have a rare opportunity to see the Ella-Mobbs Cup up close and personal as a special loan application was granted for the trophy to be on display at Goldington Road.

The trophy – revealed ahead of England’s test tour to Australia in Summer 2022 - celebrates an iconic rugby figure from both of those nations; the first Indigenous captain of the Wallabies, Mark Ella, and England and East Midlands legend, Edgar Mobbs.

The Ella-Mobbs Cup has been designed by Ella’s niece, Natalie Bateman, and it incorporates materials and symbols which allude to both players. It features elements and materials significant to the Ella family from the Yuin nation on the south coast of New South Wales, as well as incorporating elements close to Mobbs upbringing and success with England.

Won by England after a 2-1 away series success last season, the trophy which replaced the Cook Cup, is now sitting in Twickenham until the next instalment.

The only way to see the trophy, which will be on display in the CMC Marquee, is to purchase a matchday ticket.

Arrive early to watch Mobbs’ former school; Bedford Modern 1st XV v OBM XV from 5:30pm, before Bedford Blues v British Army at 7:45pm.
