James Fish joins Bedford Blues

Posted: 27th April 2023

Bedford Blues are delighted to announce the permanent acquisition of James Fish from Premiership heavyweights Northampton Saints ahead of the forthcoming 2023/24 Championship season.

The 26-year-old has been a regular face at Goldington Road over the past 18 months on various loan deals, including starting the previous six matches, and has currently scored three tries from his 17 club appearances in that time.

He is again in contention to feature on the final day of the current season this coming Saturday and is the first name confirmed to be part of the #BluesFamily in 23/24. Further announcements regarding squad retention will be made later today.

Commenting on Fish’s permanent arrival, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “We've seen the gift of having James around the group in these last six weeks and also previous to that. He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the front row and we're excited to have him with us permanently next season."

Fish departs Northampton after several years at Franklin’s Gardens having come through the Academy set-up before signing a first pro deal leading into the 2019/20 campaign.

Making 77 appearances along the way, scoring 10 tries, he also spent time with Championship duo Ampthill and Cornish Pirates during those formative years of his career and has brought a real wealth of experience to Mike Rayer’s side.

Speaking about the decision to join the ranks on a permanent basis, Fish added: “I’ve had the opportunity of playing under Mike and the coaches quite a few times in recent seasons and every time I’ve put the jersey on, I’ve loved it.

“I’m excited to see what we can do as a team next season as we’ve shown glimpses this year and we’re only going to get more consistent.

“The atmosphere at Goldington Road is amazing and the few people that have known about this move have been extremely supportive and welcoming. I can’t wait to get stuck in on Saturday and again next season and I hope to do the shirt proud.”
