REPORT | History making Adamson but defeat on the day
Dean Adamson wrote himself into more Bedford Blues folklore but it wasn’t enough to prevent them suffering a first home defeat of the season as league leaders, Ealing Trailfinders continued their march towards the title with a 40-31 success at Goldington Road.
The perennial try scorer grabbed his 113th club score to move fifth in Bedford’s all-time leaderboard and for a time, that try looked like it would be the springboard for a comeback before Ealing closed the game out with a decisive sixth score of their own.
Speaking at the final whistle, Adamson said: “A very proud moment for me and my family. Really nice to do it in-front of the fans here at Goldington Road and it’s been something I’ve been waiting a long time for.
“Shame it came in a defeat but I think we can take a lot of positives into Jersey which will be another tough game for us at home.”
Forget the Championship Try of the Week competition coming from the entire league schedule, you could have all the options from this game alone as both sides showcased high quality, attacking rugby that kept the 2,504 spectators constantly on the edge of their seats.
Ealing struck first before Blues turned things aroudn the lead for the only time in the contest. Luke Frost burrowed himself under a mound of bodies before Louis Grimoldby scored his first five pointer for the club to create a 12-7 leaqd.
You can see why Ealing are constantly up at the top of the table and while there were some of the dark arts of the game on display, they were also pretty tidy with ball in hand took a lead into half-time thanks to scores from Craig Hampson and Simon Uzokwe.
Two scores at the start of the should half should have had the game wrapped up for Ealing but they were facing a Blues side desperate to maintain their unbeaten home record.
Adamson's heroic moment kicked things off, and when Michael Le Bourgeois and Jake Garside also crossed, Goldington Road was dreaming of completing the miracle with a two point game at 31-33.
But it wasn't to be as Ealing stayed composed in the face of the onslaught, stayed patient and struck the knockout final blow through the league’s leading try scorer, Carlo Tizzano.
Ealing Director of Rugby, Ben Ward said: “This game shows what the Championship is all about. Loads of attacking rugby, everything we expected from a trip to Goldington Road.
“We’re delighted to get the five points. Bedford are a brilliant side and they were never going to be out of the game. I thought we took our time in the game, when the pressure came on at the end, I was really pleased with how we maintained composure.”
