REPORT | Late Jersey try downs Bedford
Jersey Reds took a huge step towards the Championship title as Macauley Cook’s late try saw them secure victory at Goldington Road in a game that saw Bedford Blues pretty much wrap up fourth spot with a losing bonus point.
The pair were tied for the majority of the game but Cook’s late intervention saw Jersey edge proceedings 26-19 after an absolute humdinger and a real of attrition at a packed out Goldington Road.
As everyone expected, it was a real war of attrition and while Jersey dominated the scrum for large periods of the game, Blues played their part with dominance in other areas and really made the tracelling visitors work for their victory. It would be fair to say we didn't front up over in Jersey, today the boys went toe to toe.
Jersey have a complete embarrassment of riches across all departments and that probably did tell in the second half as there were some tired Blues bodies out there at the end - a frustrating first run of three successive league defeats this season.
But with results around the league proving intriguing, Blues' point was one gained rather than three lost and they only require one additional point from the trip to Ampthill and season concluder vs Coventry to secure that desireable fourth spot in the Championship table.
Dean Adamson again showed just why the crowd love him so much with an unbelievable burst home from 60 metres, his 114th Blues try, while forwards Joey Conway and Tui Uru also dotted down as the teams were level at 12-12 and then 19-19 for the majority of the contest.
Credit to Jersey because they've found life difficult at Goldington Road over the years but they would have been smelling blood when winning the toss and heading down the slope in the first half - for Bedford, it was one mountain to climb too many as they fell to defeat.
