Trusty trio sign on for another year
Bedford Blues are proud to conclude a day of player announcements by confirming full continuity in the half-back positions as captain Alex Day, Will Maisey and Louis Grimoldby agree to remain at Goldington Road for the 2023/24 campaign.
The trio have made more than 150 combined appearances for Bedford Blues, adding over 600 points in that time, and have become influential individuals within the squad – setting the standards for their peers and leading the execution of the ‘Blues Way’ style of play on the pitch.
Skipper Alex Day will head into his third campaign as a permanent fixture of the Goldington Road set-up off the back of one his best try scoring seasons, chipping in with eight and looking for more on Saturday to conclude the campaign.
On confirming his retention, Day said: “I love everything about this club – the players, supporters, coaches and the way we play rugby. There was never another decision in my mind other than to stay if given the opportunity which fortunately has been forthcoming.
“It has been an honour to lead the team as captain and I’m excited to see what we can do next year to build on what has been a strong campaign for us securing fourth in the Championship table.”
It will take something pretty special for Will Maisey not to end the campaign as the Championship’s Top Points Scorer, with the fly-half 28 points clear of his closest competitors heading into the final fixture on Saturday.
Recently breaking the 400-point barrier for the club, Maisey also passed 50 appearances at Goldington Road this season and will be looking to keep on continuing the momentum in the forthcoming campaign.
On confirming his place in the #BluesFamily next season, he said: “Really happy to stay for another year. I’ve loved my time here at Bedford Blues so far and I’m really looking forward to making many more memories at Goldington Road.”
Grimoldby is another to have had a stellar campaign this year and, alongside Maisey, offers the key balance of left foot, right foot attacking options.
Possessing one of the most accurate kicking ratios in the Championship over the past few years, he is set to soon ascend past the 50 appearances mark having contributed 112 points from 45 games.
Speaking about the decision to stay, Grimoldby added: “I’ve loved being a part of the team again this season. We have pushed on from the year before and no doubt we’ll push on again next year.
“Alex and Will are quality players and it’s nice to be part of that group steering the team forward next year.”
Reflecting on this announcement, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer commented: “In terms of shaping and delivering our game, these three have been massively instrumental this season in the way we’ve played.
“They possess huge experience in guiding the team and keeping morale high among the whole squad.”
