Middleton wins Blues Women Players’ Player of the Year

Following a strong inaugural campaign in NC2 Midlands (Central) Division, we are delighted to announce that Bedford Blues Women’s top points scorer, Lucy Middleton has been named Players’ Player of the Year at the End of Season Gala Dinner.

One of the first names on the team sheet, Middleton has made the fly-half jersey her own right the way since the team were incepted and has become a leader and key role model in the team, featuring in pretty much every game.

Rewarded for her exploits with East Midlands appearances in recent weeks, Middleton added 72 points across 12 appearances this season, including scoring three tries in crucial victories throughout the campaign.

Currently on 98 club points, Middleton is destined to become the first player to score 100 points for the team and will be making a claim for that in the 2023/24 campaign.

Taking an increased leadership role this season, Middleton was thrown right in at the deep end when having to take on the captaincy of the side after skipper Emma Graham suffered an ACL injury at the start of pre-season. She performed the role with great integrity.

The prestigious Players’ Player of the Year award – won last year by Graham – is a huge accolade to secure with all votes coming from teammates and a true recognition of a player’s impact on the group off the field as well as performances on the pitch.

In the anonymous voting process, one player said of Middleton: “Lucy is always outstanding on the pitch, incredibly encouraging as a teammate and took on the role of captain at very short notice, driving us on all season.”

Another added: “There is no other contender to win this award in my opinion. Lucy has been an absolute rock to the team throughout the season, in good times and bad, and always gives 110% and never allows us to give up.”
