Williams re-signs at Bedford

Posted: 20th June 2023

Bedford Blues are pleased to kickstart a busy day of re-signing announcements with the news that last season’s Coaches’ Player of the Year, Robin Williams stays for a third season at Goldington Road.

The 24-year-old, kindly sponsored by Papillon Coffee House, was one of the key figures in Mike Rayer’s squad last term making 26 appearances and scoring one try. The importance of Williams staying fit all season cannot be underestimated with high levels of unavailability in his position throughout the campaign.

Those performances saw him continue his upwards personal trajectory following a solid first season in 2021/22 and he will surely ascend past 50 club appearances next season with just eight required heading into 2023/24.

Forwards Coach, Sean McCarthy said of Williams’ re-signing: “Robin had a great season last year and it was pleasing that he was recognised with one of the Player of the Year awards.

“I’m really happy he’ll be with us next season. Robin personifies the ‘engine room’ lock and he gets through a huge amount of graft on the pitch. I’m excited to see him grow as a player even more next year.”

A quiet character off the field but no nonsense on it, Williams was the latest on the well-trodden pathway from the Welsh Premiership when he initially joined the club, firmly settling into Bedford now and seeing a consistent rise in performance over the past 24 months.

He has also represented Welsh invitational side, Crawshays on a number of occasions since making the move from RGC 1404 to Bedford Blues.

Having committed his future again to the club, Williams added: “Injuries in my position meant I was given a lot of appearances last year. But that’s what you want as a rugby player, I love playing the game and want to be as involved again next season.

“I want to keep the momentum going and hopefully as a team, we can have another good season. We want to keep pushing those top teams and show the best version of ourselves. Consistency is the key to that and hopefully we can show up in every game.”

Williams’ re-signing is the first of the day, and first on the final week of announcements. The squad is very nearly assembled for 2023/24 and now it’s time for you to join the #BluesFamily – secure your Season Ticket simply by clicking here.
