Worley remains at Goldington Road
Bedford Blues are delighted to kickstart another week of exciting player announcements with the news that Matt Worley has agreed fresh terms for the 2023/24 Championship campaign, ensuring full continuity in the back three positions.
News of Worley’s re-signing follows similar confirmation of Dean Adamson, Sean French and Pat Tapley; who also remain as part of the #BluesFamily next season. Worley is the 14th player confirmed with announcements scheduled to conclude at the end of next week.
The 25-year-old – kindly supported by Rawlinson Pryde & Partners – will head into his fifth full season at Goldington Road having initially joined the club on dual registration from Northampton Saints for the concluding matches of the 2018/19 campaign.
He has currently made 69 appearances at Goldington Road, chipping in with 31 tries and will be hoping to hit the ground running next season after having the back end of last season hampered by injury.
On re-committing his future to the club, Worley said: “I’m really excited for the new campaign, particularly having the last one cut short. Hopefully I can play like I did last season before the injury. We’ve got a very exciting squad and looking forward to it.
“We played some really exciting rugby last season and retaining so many of us makes it exciting for ourselves, the fans and hopefully we can replicate that form and score some more great tries.”
Twelve months ago, Worley became the 42nd player to receive international honours while contracted to Bedford Blues as he helped Hong Kong lift the Asia Rugby Championship title before just missing out on a place in this year’s Rugby World Cup in the second repechage tournament.
He started the most recent season off like a train, notching six tries by October, before injury concerns put paid to any hopes of edging any closer to 100 club appearances. Worley will look to set it up nicely this year and put himself on the cusps of such an achievement.
Reflecting on this news to start the week, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer said: “Matt had a really good year, albeit frustratingly cut short towards the back end of the season.
"He also had the honour of playing international rugby for Hong Kong which we fully supported and in terms of continuity, he gets to take his place alongside the previous re-signings. This gives us potency out wide that has served us so well for many seasons."
