Summer works update from Goldington Road

Posted: 9th August 2023

A multitude of projects have taken place this off-season as Bedford Blues continues to strive to make Goldington Road the best place to be in Bedfordshire on any given match or event day.

The headline works undertaken has been the unplanned removal of the Grandstand roof. Fortunately, with the support of local construction and roofing specialists, M&J Group, the new roof will be completed in time for the first home game of the campaign against Northampton Saints and meet the criteria of our new Ground Safety Certificate.

In addition, renovation and decoration works have taken place in three of our venues; namely The Burrow at the Blues, The Scrum Bar and The Larry Webb Room. The club are again thankful to main club sponsors, SDC Builders Ltd, for their support with all of the above and much more, including various groundworks, new water supplies and steelwork in the stand.

Partway through last season, The Burrow suffered some structural damage in the adverse weather conditions, mainly concentrated around the roof. This has now been replaced alongside a revamp of the venue ready for the new season.

Elsewhere around Goldington Road, additional floor markings have been painted to ensure everyone’s safety and various making good of deteriorating areas have been completed.

The food unit adjacent to the main gates has been replaced with a new home adorned in club colours, further make overs to the fan village are planned and upgrades to the Players Room.

Thanks to another of the club’s main sponsors, CMC Technology Group, a new guest WiFi has been put in place ahead of the season around the ground and supporters will be delighted to read the club are also upgrading the PA system, thanks to the sponsorship of Bedford Battery.

New and additional speakers will be added to bring you announcements from any position around the ground, along with a new sound system in The CMC Marquee. These works will be completed ahead of competitive matches in September.

Whilst the GR pitch hasn’t been dug up this summer, an extensive off-season programme has been in place thanks to new Groundsman, Jack Mudge, who has the playing surface looking in great condition.

Finally, in the hope Bedford Blues get a few more decisions, the referees room has been spruced up with an en-suite ready for 2023/24.

Bedford Blues would like to add special thanks to the following people and businesses; Baz Townsend, Graham Blackwell, Geoff Comb, D Gibbs Carpentry, SDC, M&J Group, CMC IT, Bedford Battery, Bedford Electrical, D&H Plumbing & Heating.
