MATCH FOCUS | Women in cup action on home soil
Bedford Blues Women return to Goldington Road this Sunday as their competitive season gets underway with knockout rugby against St Neots (Gates open 12pm; KO 2pm).
After a strong pre-season, excitement is building within the squad for what is expected to be a strong campaign for Eddie Rennell and Peter Frost’s side who look to start on a strong footing this weekend.
Big Game Preview
It’s an early shot at redemption for Bedford Blues Women having suffered defeat against St Neots in this same cup competition 12 months ago, albeit on their travels rather than at Goldington Road (31-17).
The Cambridgeshire side also won the only league meeting between the two sides last season (34-28), so the visitors will be looking to keep hold of their 100% record in this fixture when they collide again on the weekend.
What follows this cup clash?
After a couple of frustrating league cancellations earlier this month, Rennell and Frost’s side are desperate to get things going and chase down early pace setters, Milton Keynes who happen to be their next home game (Sunday 8th October).
Whoever is knocked out of the cup on Sunday will have almost an immediate opportunity for revenge as Blues and St Neots are scheduled to meet again in just three weeks’ time.
Two home matches are set for November, while there’s another two fixtures in December to conclude the calendar year. Further cup or plate matches will be announced in due course.
Opposition Analysis
A side in somewhat of a transition, St Neots lost several of their key players to local rivals over the Summer but will still be looking to challenge for the Top Four places which they succeeded in achieving last season.
Influential scrum-half Chloe White is one of those who remains and will be tasked with steering the side through the campaign, particularly with multiple debutants named last weekend in their first run out v Milton Keynes.
