Message from the Chairman

Posted: 29th September 2023

The Board of Directors of Bedford Blues were surprised and saddened to learn of the announcement made by Jersey Reds earlier this week that they were to cease trading with immediate effect.

They thoroughly deserved to be crowned champions last season, and we have enjoyed some close and exciting encounters with them over the years. While a final outcome is yet to be determined, it is certain that they will not be able to fulfil their Premiership Cup fixtures, starting with tonight’s game at Penzance.

We have sent an expression of support and solidarity as a fellow Championship club and recognise the serious impact this will have on all the players, coaches, staff and supporters of Jersey Reds.

Although this situation underlines the financial challenges involved in running a Championship club, the board of Bedford Blues would want to restate to all our stakeholders, that our financial model demonstrates that we can and do operate the club on a sustainable basis.

We drive strong commercial revenues, created by a great matchday experience at Goldington Road and good off-field commercial management, not relying on any individual investors. This continues to create enviable financial stability and sustainability.

We are really looking forward to entertaining Leicester Tigers next weekend, where we will need every bit of support that Blues fans can muster, to take us into the league season with confidence. Your support is as always greatly appreciated, and with only a few hospitality tables remaining in the CMC Marquee and tickets selling fast, please book in and get behind the Blues.

David Gunner

Chairman, Bedford Blues Ltd
