OBITUARY | Tony Jorden
It is with deep regret that the club must share the sad news of the recent passing of former full-back and England international, Tony Jorden at the age of 76.
Starting full back in the club’s finest hour – the 1975 RFU Club competition victory over Rosslyn Park at Twickenham – Jorden was a stalwart in the side from 1974-79 making 124 appearances, contributing 352 points including 17 tries.
Leading points scorer in the 1977/78 campaign, Jorden was capped twice for England while at Goldington Road – against Wales and Scotland in the 1975 Five Nations Championship.
He made a total of seven appearances for the national side, the other five during his stints at Cambridge University and then Blackheath, adding another 22 points.
He retired from the first-class game after the opening match of 1979-80 to focus on playing junior rugby across in Hertfordshire. Latterly, he became an England selector.
Away from rugby, Jorden was a keen cricketer and featured for Essex from 1966-70 and also represented Bedfordshire.
A Cambridge blue in both sports in 1968 and 1969, he captained the cricket side in his second year.
The thoughts of everyone associated with Bedford Blues are with the family and friends of Tony. Our club flag will be flown at half-mast in his memory.
