Sean McCarthy departs as Forwards Coach

Posted: 12th October 2023

Saturday’s victory over Leicester Tigers brought about the end of an era for Sean McCarthy who has decided to stand down as Forwards Coach ahead of the 2023/24 Championship campaign beginning later this month.

McCarthy, who returned to the club in August 2021 to fulfil the role, has been an integral part of Mike Rayer’s coaching staff over the past two years. Everyone at Bedford Blues wishes Sean well for his next steps, including the safe and healthy arrival of his first child early next year with wife, Holly.

Speaking about his time at Goldington Road, McCarthy said: “It’s been an honour to coach this team. I think it’s been six or seven years involved with this club altogether – what I can say is it’s definitely been the best time of my rugby career. A fantastic occasion to sign out on and couldn’t have asked for a better ending last Saturday.”

McCarthy’s association with Bedford began during his playing days when he swapped Jersey for Goldington Road in the Summer of 2017.

He made 81 appearances, helping the club secure back-to-back third place finishes and skippered the side for the final two seasons before hanging up his boots following the truncated campaign in early 2021.

Not away from the club for long, McCarthy returned a few months later to join the coaching staff and was part of some notable results in recent years, including victory away at the champions, Ealing Trailfinders; joyous Boxing Day moments and concluding with success against the 11-time Premiership winners on Saturday.

Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer commented: “Sean has been a fantastic servant to Bedford Blues and whilst we are sad to see him go, he goes with our sincere best wishes for what the future holds. We have always had a family first approach here at the club and completely understand Sean’s decision at this time.

"He leaves a great foundation behind for us to carry on with, and with Jim Henry from Saints already here, we will take our time on a decision whether to look to replace Sean or not.”

Best of luck, Sean! We look forward to welcoming you, Holly and the new arrival back to Goldington Road soon. You’re welcome anytime #OnceABlueAlwaysABlue
