MATCH FOCUS | League action resumes for Blues Women

Posted: 16th November 2023

There’s no greater challenge for Bedford Blues Women on their return to NC2 Midlands (South) Division action in a top-of-the-table clash against Harpenden Ladies (Sunday - 2pm KO).

The opportunity to open up a sizable gap at the top of the table comes on Sunday with a victory on home soil seeing Blues Women in an incredibly strong position as the quest for promotion continues.

Big Game Preview

With minimal league action left in the calendar year, a victory on Sunday would pretty much see Blues Women guarantee a spot at the top of the tree for Christmas Day.

It’s going to be an incredibly difficult challenge, however, with Harpenden the side picked out in pre-season as arguably the biggest threat to Bedford’s chances of securing a league title for the second time in three seasons.

Both sides head into the game with form on their side so it’ll be a clash of the titans on Sunday.

What follows this titanic title clash?

This is a hugely important two weeks for the side with this the true test of their title credentials, then the opportunity to continue their ‘Road to Twickenham’ with a Round of 32 Cup clash against Rugby Lionesses, also at GR on Sun 26 Nov.

A further two fixtures in December conclude the calendar year with a trip to Stockwood Park (Sun 3rd) and concluding the calendar year with the visit from Hitchin II (17th).

Opposition Analysis

Always difficult to gauge an opponent on the first ever meeting but it’s fair to say that Blues Women have been training with intensity in recent weeks and fully expecting a battle on the weekend.

Similar to Blues Women in that the side formed during the pandemic, Harpenden have been quietly going about their business and are attempting to better a fourth placed finish last season.

They head into the game off the back of two successive away victories (vs Milton Keynes 29-20 and St Neots 41-10) plus a thumping 58-7 success over Stockwood to kickstart proceedings. A heavy defeat against Hitchin has derailed their title ambitions somewhat so they’ll have to target nothing other than a win on Sunday.
