REPORT | Blues run in eight to beat Cambridge
Bedford Blues ran in 50+ points on home soil for the second successive fixture during a 59-19 victory over Cambridge.
It was another vintage display from Mike Rayer's side who continue to grow game upon game and rose to sixth in the Championship table, building some more momentum ahead of the tough trip to Caldy next weekend.
Michael Le Bourgeois said: “We’re improving week on week which is a big positive for us. We had a bit of a rocky start but then to put 59 points on the board is good going.
“We did the simple things really well in attack, looked after the ball and scored some great tries. We’ve got some really good individuals who can pull things out of nowhere but today was also a team effort. Doing the basics well gave us those platforms.
“It’s very cliché to say the crowd were our 16th man but they turn up to watch a certain brand of rugby and I thought we delivered that which makes it all the more pleasing.”
The only slight concern will again be the slow start at Goldington Road with Cambridge allowed to get ahead 7-0 then again at 12-7 before Blues decided to wake up.
But when they did start to crank the gears they were once again irresistable and totally blew away their opponents in the second half to run in the eight tries and secure themselves all five points.
Sean French is like a man possesed at the moment and his phenomenal hat-trick took him to ten tries already in the season and an astonishing 30 from just 36 appearances.
It's the luck of the Irish at the moment as Joey Conway is making a bit of a name for himself on the try scoring charts and his sixth of the campaign, from loosehead prop, took him above Dean Adamson and behind only French in the standings at club level.
Cameron King, Michael Le Bourgeois, Will Maisey and the returning Jake Garside also got in one the act as Blues won the first competitive meeting with Cambirdge in 44 years with suitable aplomb to satisfy the near 3,000 crowd in attendance.
King added: "We wanted to give the fans a good representation of what we can do and I think we achieved that. Home games are always special to play in and once we got the ball rolling, we did a lot of dangerous things.”
