Cambridge Double Header Announced

Posted: 15th February 2024

History is set to be made next month as both of our senior Bedford Blues men’s and women’s sides are set to contest fixtures on the same day for the very first time.

To make things even greater, both games will take place at the same venue as we make it a Double Derby Day against our friends at Cambridge on Saturday 9th March.

The friendly between our respective women’s sides will kick-off at 12pm and precede the huge Championship battle, which takes place at the later time of 3pm. The day represents a first ever competitive visit to Cambridge for Mike Rayer’s side who will look to make it a league double against the Blood & Sand.

Making it a full day of rugby, live coverage of England v Ireland in the Guinness Six Nations will be available around Ellgia Fields (4:45pm KO at Twickenham) following the double header.

Back in December 2022, our two senior sides were due to appear on the same day with the men’s team out in Jersey and the women on the mainland. Sadly, the latter match was postponed that day due to heavy snowfall.

Tickets for the main event are already on sale, with adult tickets at the reduced rate of £15 when purchased online simply by clicking here. U18s are FREE entry.

We are still awaiting communication from Cambridge in regard to ticket news for supporters who may wish to watch the women’s match only. Further announcements will be made in the build-up to the historic day.

Bedford Blues Women joint Head Coach, and former Cambridge captain, Eddie Rennell said: “Firstly, we’d like to thank Cambridge Women for agreeing to a friendly and therefore making this a Double Header matchday.

“Cambridge Women are having a great season, and we are really looking forward to this additional fixture. It will be a special day for the club with both senior sides in action and hopefully a strong level of support will get behind both matches.”
