REPORT | Off colour Blues beaten by Ealing
It was a frustrating end to the 2023/24 Championship campaign as Bedford Blues fell to a 59-12 defeat at the home of the Champions, Ealing Trailfinders.
A lot of effort and endeavour, and actually a better performance than the scoreboard perhaps suggested, but if you can’t nail the basics then you’re always in danger of being punished. Against the Champions, there was nowhere to hide.
Ealing had less 22m entries than a Bedford side who came to the capital to spoil the party, but that ruthlessness when in the ‘red zone’ ultimately made all the difference and saw them run away with it in the end.
A perfect way for them to set the scene of lifting the trophy in-front of their home support; seeing all the Blues fans staying behind not only to congratulate Ealing but thank the boys for another great season was a real sight to behold.
Sean French completed another frantic try scoring campaign with his 19th of the campaign, while Joe Howard signed off his debut season with another try to add to his Players’ Player of the Year award lifted last week.
Fourth was already secured before heading to London. In the end, Blues were in the clear by six points to fifth placed, Hartpury University. Target set, target secured.
The challenge will now be can Mike Rayer’s use two successive fourth placed finishes as the springboard for greater things in 24/25. A few different bounces of the ball and they could have been higher this season. But that’s hindsight, a wonderful thing.
