Six to depart Goldington Road

Posted: 20th May 2024

Bedford Blues can today confirm a sextet of departures from Goldington Road following the final Championship fixture of the season on Saturday.

Long standing stalwarts and forwards duo, Jordan Onojaife and Jacob Fields, will call time on their rugby careers having played more than a combined 200 matches at Bedford.

For Onojaife, it could be the perfect farewell against his former employers, with the second row in line for his 100th appearance should he be selected on Saturday.

Robin Williams and Louis Grimoldby have both been regular names on the team sheet since arriving ahead of the 21/22 campaign, becoming important figures on and off the field and both leaving with some incredible memories from their time in Blue.

Williams won the Coaches’ Player of the Year award for 22/23, while it will take a long while for Grimoldby’s drop goal against Doncaster – which now turns out to be his final moment at Goldington Road – to be erased from the memory banks.

After the demise of Wasps, Kieran Curran linked up with Mike Rayer’s side for 18 months, enjoying an incredible debut in the sellout Boxing Day victory over Ampthill in 2022.

Jordan Venter joined at the start of this season and while injuries have disrupted his time on the field, he still managed to runout for the club on 12 occasions.

Ahead of travelling to Ealing this weekend, the six have made an accumulative 388 appearances, adding 303 points.

At last Friday’s End of Season Gala Dinner, all six players were presented with a special jersey, including their ‘Blues Brother’ number, that being the order of which they first represented Blues in the club’s illustrious 137-year history.

Jacob Fields – Blues Brother #3638
Jordan Onojaife – Blues Brother #3669
Louis Grimoldby – Blues Brother #3756
Robin Williams – Blues Brother #3762
Kieran Curran – Blues Brother #3803
Jordan Venter – Blues Brother #3816

Director of Rugby, Rayer, said: “It’s always a sad time of the year when players leave the Club. These boys have given everything for us throughout their time here and we’ll look to give them all a good send off this Saturday. We wish them all the best and hopefully our paths cross again in the future.”

We would like to thank their respective player sponsors; Jaltek, Blackchair, Burman Plant, The FECCers and Eagle Travel for their support this campaign.
