Will Maisey continues stay in Bedford
Bedford Blues conclude a first day of re-signing news with the announcement that influential fly-half Will Maisey will extend his time at Goldington Road into the 2024/25 campaign.
The 31-year-old has been Blues’ top points scorer in every full campaign since joining the club in March 2020, surpassing the 500 club points barrier at Hartpury University back in February.
He is less than 100 points away from hitting 1,500 throughout his career.
Maisey, like his captain Alex Day whose re-signing was confirmed earlier today, will also look to ascend into the illustrious century club in 2024/25 currently holding a record of 82 appearances at Bedford’s premier sporting club.
On extending his stay to a fifth full campaign, Maisey said: “As a squad, we really want to build on what we've achieved in the last two seasons. If we can get some consistency in our performances then I think we can definitley kick on again next year.
"For me, I always have the same goal going into a new season which is to play every single game. If that happens with a club like Bedford, you must be doing something right - it means you're training well, making good combinations within the squad.
"We've got a wealth of experience now in the back line and we all lean on each other and speak pretty much every day to get ready for the weekend. Excited to get started again for 24/25.
Maisey’s finest hours in Bedford colours have seen him lift the coveted Players’ Player of the Year award at the End of Season Awards Dinner in 2021/22, before backing that up by being Championship Rugby’s top marksman in the following campaign.
A proven Championship operator, Maisey has kicked over 1,000 of his career points total in the second tier following prior spells at Nottingham and Coventry.
Starting his career at Butts Park; the playmaker made his Coventry debut at 18 whilst playing in National One, before gaining his first taste of life in the Championship with Nottingham.
Maisey spent only one season with the Green and Whites before a year’s spell at near neighbours Ampthill.
A return to Coventry followed for the start of the 2016/17 campaign, where Maisey helped secure promotion back to the Championship in 2018, firmly embedding himself as an important part of the West Midlands club making 123 appearances and scoring 794 points.
He made the short hop down to Bedford shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and has been a mainstay ever since, setting the standards for his peers and helping lead the execution of the ‘Blues Way’ style of play on the pitch.
Reflecting on keeping hold of another one of his trusted lieutenants in the backs division, Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer commented: “In a similar vein to Daisy whose retention we announced earlier today, Will is a vital cog in the team at 10. He knows the Championship inside out and we still believe there's a lot more to come - he's maturing nicely with age.
"With Louis Grimoldby moving on, he's going to be as important - if not more important - for us again next season."
