REPORT | Six tries on Derby Day
Bedford Blues ran in six tries to keep local bragging rights firmly at Goldington Road with a 45-24 victory over Ampthill.
It wasn't perfect, but sometimes it doesn't have to be on Derby Day, and Blues will take huge confidence from the togetherness they were able to show on the field to get the result.
Holding a healthy 24-3 lead at the break, Blues were a little hap hazard in the opening exchanges of the second 40 to allow Ampthill back into the game and the visitors narrowed the gap to just seven points on two seperate occasions.
But Blues held firm to run in a flurry of tries late on and secure the full five points, setting up a mouthwatering clash with Coventry under the Friday Night Lights. In terms of the points scoring, credit to both kickers who were both faultless off the tee - Will Maisey adding fifteen points and never looking in doubt. The epimote of calm, confidence and composure.
Man of the Match Joel Matavesi scored twice, a rarity in terms of his career but thoroughly deserved, while Fred Tuilagi, Joe Howard and George Smith also chipped in with crucial tries.
It wouldn't be a home game without a customary Dean Adamson try, moving to just seven points away from becoming the club's greatest ever marksman. It's a matter of when, not if, we can celebrate with the local favourite. And his try in this one was mightily important oo, a decisive one in the 74th minute.
No rest for the wicked. That huge game with Coventry comes next and after some tough recent history against the West Midlands outfit, we'll really need our #BluesFamily behind us to get a positive result. A crowd of 3,318 for this one and we hope for similar under the lights.
