Day becomes first to pledge future for 25-26
Bedford Blues are delighted to announce that Club Captain, Alex Day has become the first player to re-commit his future at Goldington Road for the 2025/26 campaign.
A leader on and off the field, Day has been an integral part of Mike Rayer’s squad since permanently joining the club in 2021, taking over the captaincy 12 months later.
One of the most experienced players in history at this level, Day has made close to 250 second tier appearances and is a former winner of the competition from his previous time with Saracens.
He is also set to become a member of the Blues Century Club and all being well in the next couple of weeks, will lead the side out for his 100th appearance in the home finale against Chinnor later this month.
On pledging his future for a fifth full season at Goldington Road, Day said: “Delighted to sign on again for next season, no other decision in my mind.
“I say it every year, but we’ve got the best fanbase in the league and I stand by that. We’ve had a good season so far, our #BluesFamily have been integral to that, and that’s the main driving force behind me staying.
“It’s a really exciting time to be part of Bedford Blues. The team do an amazing job off the field as well, so we need to try and do the business on it.”
Starting his career in the Northampton Saints Academy, Day showed his potential from a young age, helping England U20s win back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2012 and 2013 before adding the IRB Junior World Championships to his collection.
Several appearances for the Saints ‘A’ side and a beneficial dual-reg at Moseley saw Day make his Northampton first-team debut in November 2013, going on to make 11 appearances in total over the next two years including his Premiership debut, studying under the expert tutelage of former Blues captain, Lee Dickson.
Not content with playing second fiddle, Day moved to Cornish Pirates in 2015 in search of regular game time and over the course of the next four years was a mainstay down at The Mennaye and led the team as captain on numerous occasions, making 114 appearances and being named Players’ Player of the Year in 2017/18.
Signed by Saracens the following season, Day made further Premiership appearances during his time at the club, before heading to Bedford ready for the 2021/22 campaign.
