Will Maisey continues spell in Bedford
Bedford Blues continue a first week of re-signing news with the announcement that influential fly-half Will Maisey will extend his time at Goldington Road into the 2025/26 campaign.
The 32-year-old has been Blues’ top points scorer in every full campaign since joining in March 2020, and is fast closing in on becoming just the fifth man in history to surpass 1,000 points in club colours.
Looking wider afield, he is also less than 200 points away from hitting 2,000 throughout his career and will be targeting that statistic in 2025/26 among others.
Maisey, like his captain Alex Day whose re-signing was confirmed yesterday, has been an ever present in the side of late and ascended into the century club for appearances back in February.
On extending his stay to a sixth full campaign, Maisey said: “You can see on everyone’s faces that this has been a really enjoyable season, so I’m absolutely delighted to stick around for 2025/26.
“If we can keep a good core of the group and build on what we’ve done this season, then there’s no reason we can’t kick on again next year. We’ll give it our best as we always do and hopefully, we can do the #BluesFamily proud.
“There are some individual records on the horizon but I’m not going to focus on those, just being involved in every game and having an impact on the team is what matters to me. They’re an afterthought but if the records do come, while we’re all playing well, then that would be amazing.
“If I’m scoring points then it means the team is doing well. It’s cliché but that’s all that matters to me.”
Maisey’s finest hours in Bedford colours have seen him lift the coveted Players’ Player of the Year award at the End of Season Awards Dinner in 2021/22, before backing that up by being Championship Rugby’s top marksman in the following campaign.
He is on track to become the leading points scorer for the league again this year, currently holding a 17 points advantage over Hartpury’s Harry Bazalgette with four fixtures to play.
A proven Championship operator, Maisey has spent the majority of his career at this level following prior spells at Nottingham and Coventry.
Starting his career at Butts Park; the playmaker made his Coventry debut at 18 whilst playing in National One, before gaining his first taste of life in the Championship with Nottingham.
Maisey spent only one season with the Green and Whites before a year’s spell at near neighbours Ampthill.
A return to Coventry followed for the start of the 2016/17 campaign, where Maisey helped secure promotion back to the Championship in 2018, firmly embedding himself as an important part of the West Midlands club making 123 appearances and scoring 794 points.
He made the short hop down to Bedford shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and has been a mainstay ever since, setting the standards for his peers and helping lead the execution of the ‘Blues Way’ style of play on the pitch.
