REPORT | Ten try Blues secure Derby Day win

Bedford Blues made it six victories in a row on Derby Day as they put in one of their finest performances to secure a 66-12 bonus point victory at Ampthill.

Coming into the game, all the talk from outside was about how this would be a gritty, attritional game and the team that fronted up best would edge a nail-biter. Blues put paid to all those ideas with a simply remarkable display that will really stand the test of time - just about every facet of the game went to plan and saw Blues jump into the play-off places for the first time this season. 

Even more remarkable, given the nature of the scoreboard, was the amount of try scorers in the game for Mike Rayer's men. It really was a full team effort - Clubber TV had Ryan Hutler as their standout performer, the Bedford Blues Supporters Club chose James Lennon; but it could have been anyone given the nature of the performance. 

Dean Adamson's remarkable start to the season continued with two on the day, for five in four to start the season, while his fellow winger Ryan Hutler also joined him in the brace column. Plus there was additional scores from Will Maisey, James Lennon, Lucas Titherington, James Fish, Oisin Heffernan and Benson - the highest points accumulated in history for a Blues v Ampthill fixture. 

Some of the scores were real highlight reel stuff, others due to sheer grit and determination. It was always accepted this was a mighty tough start to the campaign, but to pick up 13 points out of 20 available so far isn't bad going considering the calibre of opposition faced. 

The challenge, as ever, is to try and continue the momentum. Bedford v Doncaster is a Champ Rugby fixture with the scarcest amount of away victories in the past decade, just one, and Blues will want to keep it that way. Donny will be flying after their last gasp heroics against Worcester, but then so were Hartpury after their own brilliance against the new boys.

The team will enjoy this one, and so they should. A couple of beers shared before switching back into work mode and all eyes on a first Friday Night Lights of the campaign, on home soil for Halloween.
